Chapter 16

Monday, July 3rd

“You need to leave that boy,” Lay-Lay told Jaquanna the next morning as they sat at the table drinking coffee. It was the same house and the same kitchen. Jaquanna hated being here.

“But I love him, Mama.”

“Uh-huh. I know,” she said, “Just like I thought I loved Benny.”

“Naw, Mama, this ain’t the same.”

“Well, it still got your eye all swole up just the same.”

“Naw, but it really was kinda really my fault though, Mama.”

“Making excuses for him, huh?” She sipped her coffee to hide her cocky grin, as if she’d seen and heard it all before.

“Naw, it ain’t that.”

“But?”

“But he a good man, Mama, and you know that.”

“But even good man’s got problems,” Lay-Lay said, “and, hell, he cain’t be all too damn good if he whupping on you and carrying on.”

Jaquanna and her mother had gotten closer during their time apart. It had taken Jaquanna awhile to realize that her mother was just as much a victim as she herself had been. At first, she truly resented and even thought she hated her mother. Number one: for bringing that beast into their home, and number two: for not standing up for her kids and defending them against him. She’d felt her mother was weak and spineless. Later, she understood better as she realized just how often women found themselves in economical, emotional, and/or physical bondage: simply staying because they were afraid to leave, even when they weren’t truly happy with what they had. Afraid to be without; afraid to be alone; or afraid of what the man might do to her if she tried to leave.

Letters, visits, phone calls all led to Jaquanna getting to know the person within Lay-Lay’s being. This helped her to discover just how beautiful a person her mother truly was, and all of the time and communication simply brought them closer.

“Yeah, I hear you.” Jaquanna relented.

“I mean, I like the boy,” Lay-Lay admitted. “I like all he done did for you. I like how he came by and checked on me while you was gone and everything. He’s been real good about all of that, but once they start putting they hands on you, Jah, it only gets worse. Trust me. I know. I done been through it. Not once, not twice, but three times.” She held up her fingers so Jaquanna could count them.

Jaquanna knew the stories of old boyfriends and their mistreatment of her mother. She surely didn’t want to follow in that pattern. ‘That shit’s for the pigeons’ she’d taken to saying.

“So, but why though?” she asked her mother. “I mean, like why do you think you kept being with those kinda dudes like, you know what I’m saying?”

“Well, I’m a little woman,” Lay-Lay said as if that meant something. “And I’ve always liked great big old strong men.” She explained, “You know the big, wild, angry brute that would tear my goodies up but also stand against anything but God himself to protect me.”

Jaquanna nodded as she understood and recognized the description as well as the desire.
